Alpen Schatz™ Swiss cowbells represent a family craft dating back over 250 years. They embrace the festive and centuries old traditions of the breathtaking Appenzeller region of Switzerland. Each decorative bell strap is handcrafted by the descendants of the original founding fathers of this alpine tradition. As their ancestors did before them, our craftsmen use only the finest of Swiss organic cow leather and each piece is adorned with representative Alpine figures, hand carved, cut, and tooled from Alpine brass pieces. They also specialize in decorative cow collars, armbands and belts, which also play a big role in Swiss traditions.
Swiss Cowbells have been worn as standard by Alpine cattle for hundreds of years. When left to free-graze in alpine meadows, they serve the purpose of being able to easily find the odd cow that has wandered off for a nibble in that even greener pasture over yonder.
A large, decorative version of the cowbell is worn for festive occasions such as the colorful spring and winter cow drives, taking the cattle up to the high pastures in the spring and back to the valley pastures in the fall.
Swiss Tradition states:
"A Bell means protection and keeps evil spirits away from the house, yard and loved ones. In addition, anyone who hears the sound of a bell has luck. Cannons were cast for war purposes, while bells were cast during peacetime. That's why a beautiful bell and the accompanying sound are also a sign of peace and security."
Our Swiss bells make great decorations for your home, dog cart, or prizes for competitions and clubs. In fact custom engraved plaques can be ordered for the medium and large bells, forever personalizing the bell for the occasion.
We encourage our bells to be used for memorabilia and/or prizes for that special occasion, whether a parade, wedding, conference, dog show, or sporting event.
We offer special pricing for bells purchased in quantity for a private or corporate event. Please enquire separately for a custom quote.
NOTE: HD = Heavy Duty bell and LW = Light Weight bell (small bells only)
TREICHELN are acorn shaped bells giving out a rich, deep tone. They are the sound most heard when hiking in the Alps, softly ringing from the necks of cows and goats roaming Alpine meadows.
GLOCKEN are round shaped bells cast out of a mold and ring at a higher pitch, much like a church bell.
